Young Carers

There are over 700,000 Young Carers across the country. A Young Carer is someone under 18 who takes on physical, practical or emotional responsibilities at home because someone in their family is disabled, has been ill for a long time, experiences mental ill health, has a learning disability or has a problem linked to addiction.

Some tasks that children may do:
Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping).
Physical care, such as lifting or helping someone use the stairs or physiotherapy.
Personal care such as dressing, washing and helping with toileting needs.
Managing the family budget, collecting benefits and prescriptions.
Managing and administering medication
Looking after or ‘parenting’ siblings with medical needs.
Helping someone communicate, whether that is due to a hearing impairment or because English is not the family’s first language.
Providing emotional support for other family members.

Peel Common Junior School endeavours to identify and offer the support that young carers need, whether through ELSA sessions or our Young Carers club where we have previously had afternoons of fun and food!
